May in Cornwall
02 May 2018
May is a wonderful time to visit Cornwall, and the perfect time to visit our lovely little hamlet of Port Gaverne, right on the North Cornish coast. With warm sunny days and light evenings, there’s plenty to see and do – but without the hustle and bustle of the summer holidays.
May is the peak month for hedgerow flowers and edible plants, and where better to come and experience the vibrancy of bluebell woods in full bloom.
Whether you’re visiting for Whitsun or the May Bank Holiday weekend, there are certain things you should definitely add to your holiday itinerary this May – including getting out and about and exploring the coastal footpath. Port Gaverne is perfect for walkers, as we’re located directly on the South West Coast Path, you can literally walk from your door. With beautiful scenery, beaches to picnic on along the way, and traditional Cornish inns where you can finish the walk off with a refreshing drink or two, there really is no better way to see the county.
Everyone seems to have a wetsuit these days, and May is a great time to get in the sea and enjoy some wild swimming straight from our beach at Port Gaverne. You can experience coasteering, sea kayaking & paddle boarding too, straight from the beach, with Cornish Rock Tors, based in Port Gaverne. If you're into surfing, then Polzeath is very close by, just 10 minutes drive. Bring your own surf boards, or hire from the beach - there's also plenty of opportunity for surfing lessons too.
Cycling is another great activity for May in Cornwall. The Camel Trail starts from Wadebridge, just 15 minutes drive away from Port Gaverne and Port Isaac. Cycle to Padstow, or you might enjoy the tranquil and quieter route alongside the river, towards Bodmin. Plenty of birds and wildlife to be spotted along the route.
If that all sounds a bit too active, you can always simply kick back and enjoy the coastal views and a drink and a bite to eat, while watching the comings and goings on the beach, from our local pub, The Port Gaverne Hotel, or the new beach café, Pilchards. And the foodies amongst you are in luck - head up the road to Port Isaac to dine in style at one of Nathan Outlaw’s restaurants – a fantastic experience.
